Light absorbtion and maximum yield of photosynthesis during autumn phytoplankton bloom in the western Black Sea. IBSS Repository
Churilova, T. Ya.; Finenko, Z. Z.; Turgul, S..
In the frame of GEF/UNDP Black Sea Ecosystem Recovery Project the effect of nutrient availability on phytoplankton light absorption and maximum quantum yield of carbon fixation (фmax) has been investigated. It has been found out that chlorophyll a concentration (Chl a) varied from 0.3 to 10 mg m-3 increasing from deep-water region to shelf waters. At the shallow stations, where upper mixed layer spread deeper the bottom of euphotic zone, the homogenous pigment distribution was observed. In the deep-water region the Chl a profiles showed the presence of a deep Chl a maximum (DCM) below a seasonal density cline. The functional characteristics of phytoplankton showed depth-dependent variation. The phytoplankton from DCM was characterized 20 % lower values of...

Limnology of a lateral lagoon system connected to a Neotropical reservoir (Rosana reservoir, São Paulo/Paraná, Brazil) Biological Sciences
Ferrareze, Mateus; Instituto de Biociências; Nogueira, Marcos Gomes; Instituto de Biociências; Sartori, Luciana; Instituto de Biociências.
The aim of this work was to perform a comparative analysis of four lateral lagoons and of the main channel of the Rosana Reservoir (Paranapanema river), southeast Brazil. The fieldwork was conducted during dry and rainy periods of 2004 and 2005. The analyzed variables were chlorophyll a, turbidity, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, dissolved nutrients (ammonium, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate and silicate), Secchi disk transparency, suspended solids, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and electrical conductivity. Intense summer rainfall provided a high input of allochthonous material into the system, resulting in conspicuous changes - high turbidity and nutrient concentrations and low transparency, especially in the reservoir channel. The cluster analysis...

Limnology of the largest multi-use artificial reservoir in NE Brazil: The Castanhão Reservoir, Ceará State Anais da ABC (AABC)
LACERDA,LUIZ D.; SANTOS,JANAÍNA A.; MARINS,ROZANE V.; SILVA,FRANCISCO A.T.F. DA.
Abstract This work reviews the limnology of the largest multi-use reservoir in NE Brazil, the Castanhão Reservoir in Ceará State, during 5 years of an extended drought when the reservoir’s volume decreased from 88% to about 30%. Major physical and chemical parameters of the water column, phytoplankton community, trophic state and sediment geochemistry were monitored, as well as the impact from extensive aquaculture. Water quality of the full reservoir was maintained due to hydrodynamics, which transport nutrients to the hypolimnion of a stratified water column, rendering an oligotrophic state to the reservoir, notwithstanding the large nutrient inputs from aquaculture and irrigated agriculture. However, with the extension of the drought period, the...

Long-term water quality in the lower Seine: Lessons learned over 4 decades of monitoring ArchiMer
Romero, Estela; Le Gendre, Romain; Garnier, Josette; Billen, Gilles; Fisson, Cedric; Silvestre, Marie; Riou, Philippe.
The Seine River is a highly artificialised catchment in Europe, comprising both productive agricultural areas and intense industrial and commercial activity. Due to its strategic importance, monitoring programs in the river started as early as the 1970s. The present study compiles and analyses this valuable data set (1970–2014), thoroughly describing the riverine section downstream of Paris and the estuary. We identify long-term trends and shifting patterns in nutrients and oxygen, and pay special attention to the river’s evolution after the year 2000, when the European Water Framework Directive came into force. The study has a manifest management perspective, and the results are discussed on the basis of the environmental quality standards proposed in...

Macroalgal population and sustainability ArchiMer
Morand, Philippe; Merceron, Michel.
Algal blooms, often associated with eutrophication, are common in temperate regions in coastal lagoons and estuarine areas as well as in open seas. However, because of recent changes in water flows and sediment and nutrient loads in most rivers, eutrophication phenomena are now occurring in areas previously non affected. One of its most widespread and easily recognized effects in a coastal marine ecosystem is the excessive growths and drifts of macroalgae, to such a degree that the biomass becomes a significant problem. The nutrients, notably from anthropogenic origin, constitute a significant factor in the appearance of the blooms in coastal waters. Besides a background originating from natural areas and precipitations, nutrients come from agriculture,...

Methanogenesis in an impacted and two dystrophic coastal lagoons (Macaé, Brazil) BABT
Furtado,André Luiz dos Santos; Casper,Peter; Esteves,Francisco de Assis.
This study investigated the methanogenic activity in sediment of the Imboacica (human impacted), Cabiúnas and Comprida coastal lagoons in Rio de Janeiro State (Brazil). Methane was not detected in water and sediment samples from the three lagoons. The measured nutrient concentrations in the pore-water indicated that methanogens activity was not limited by nutrients. Methanogenic activity was not detected under in vitro conditions, indicating that terminal organic carbon mineralisation via methanogenesis was negligible for the top 6 cm of sediment at the sampling time.

MicroRNAs play critical roles during plant development and in response to abiotic stresses Genet. Mol. Biol.
Lima,Júlio César de; Loss-Morais,Guilherme; Margis,Rogerio.
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been identified as key molecules in regulatory networks. The fine-tuning role of miRNAs in addition to the regulatory role of transcription factors has shown that molecular events during development are tightly regulated. In addition, several miRNAs play crucial roles in the response to abiotic stress induced by drought, salinity, low temperatures, and metals such as aluminium. Interestingly, several miRNAs have overlapping roles with regard to development, stress responses, and nutrient homeostasis. Moreover, in response to the same abiotic stresses, different expression patterns for some conserved miRNA families among different plant species revealed different metabolic adjustments. The use of deep sequencing technologies for the...

Modélisation des blooms de Gymnodinium mikimotoï le long de la façade atlantique française : répartition spatiale ArchiMer
Loyer, Sophie; Lazure, Pascal; Gentien, Patrick; Menesguen, Alain.
In order to study the occurrence of Gymnodinium mikimotoï bloom on the French Atlantic coast, a three-dimensional model of primary production was set up. The biological model was coupled to a hydrodynamic model previously developed at Ifremer, by the intermediary of transport, diffusion and heat fluxes. The cycles of three limiting elements for the phytoplankton growth were modelised: nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon. The second phase of the study aimed at reproducing the summer dinoflagellate blooms. In this new approach a model of the species Gymnodinium mikimotoï was coupled with the previous biomass model which provides the physical and chemical environments. The study focuses on the results obtained by this specific sub-model. The parametrisation was...

Modélisation du devenir à moyen terme dans l'eau et le sédiment des éléments majeurs (N, P, Si) rejetés par la Seine en Baie de Seine ArchiMer
Cugier, Philippe.
The Bay of Seine is a coastal ecosystem submitted to a large river input (Seine river), which brings important quantities of nutrients. This nutrient enrichment leads to frequent eutrophication events and, from the beginning of the eighties, regular toxic phytoplanktonic (Dynophysis) blooms are observed. In order to study the nutrient cycles (nitrogen, phosphorus, silica) and their contribution to phytoplanktonic stock regulation, a three dimensional model has been developed, based on the coupling between an hydrodynamic part taking into account sediment dynamics (SAM-3D) and an ecological part, which accounts for the main biological compartments and processes. This model is able to reproduce the main physical and biological characteristics of the...

Modélisation écologique tridimensionnelle (3D) de la baie de Seine (Manche, France) ArchiMer
Cugier, Philippe; Ménesguen, Alain; Guillaud, Jean-francois.
A three dimensional (3D) ecological model is developed and applied to the "baie de Seine" area. It consists of a 3D model for hydrodynamics and port (SiAM3D) coupled to an ecological model simulating nutrient cycles (nitrogen, phosphorus, silicon) and two phytoplanktonic classes (diatoms and flagellates). The model is validated by confronting simulations with nine year long series of measurements and then used to better understand the ecosystem functioning. It especially allows to show the role of the proportion of silicon with regard to nitrogen and phosphorus in the summer loadings of the Seine river on the more or less strong presence of flagellates in the river plume. The model was also used to test various hypotheses of reduction of nitrogen loading...

Modelling ecological change over half a century in a subtropical estuary: impacts of climate change, land-use, urbanization and freshwater extraction ArchiMer
Condie, Scott A.; Hayes, Donna; Fulton, Elizabeth A.; Savina, Marie.
The Clarence River Estuary is the largest estuary in southeast Australia, with an extensive floodplain encompassing multiple river channels and a large coastal lagoon. It is the focus of major commercial and recreational fisheries and there is pressure to divert its freshwater inputs for agricultural and domestic uses. We used a spatial biogeochemical model to simulate the variability and evolution of this system on timescales from days to decades over the past half century. Like most tropical and subtropical estuaries, the Clarence River Estuary is strongly influenced by river discharge, sediment and nutrient loads. Given the high nutrient loads arriving from the upper catchment, plankton biomasses in the model were typically limited by flushing through...

Nutrient and phytoplankton distribution in the Loire River plume (Bay of Biscay, France) resolved by a new Fine Scale Sampler ArchiMer
Lunven, Michel; Guillaud, Jean-francois; Youenou, Agnes; Crassous, Marie-pierre; Berric, Roger; Le Gall, Erwan; Kerouel, Roger; Labry, Claire; Aminot, Alain.
A new Fine Scale Sampler (FSS) was designed and used in the Loire River plume (Bay of Biscay, France) in order to study phytoplankton distribution in highly stratified water columns. The FSS consists of a linear array of 15 sampling bottles, set horizontally at 20 cm intervals. Data acquired from the CTD and fluorescence probe of the FSS enable it to be precisely positioned at the depth of the highest density gradient or at the chlorophyll a maximum. The FSS made it possible to investigate fine scale vertical distribution of phytoplankton and relationships with water density, nutrient concentrations or light availability, for spring and summer conditions. Under spring conditions, the entire upper layer exhibited a dominant diatom population (Chaetoceros...

NUTRIENT EFFECTS ON CONSUMER DEMAND: A PANEL DATA APPROACH AgEcon
Dhehibi, Boubaker; Gil, Jose Maria; Angulo, Ana Maria.
The objective of this paper is to analyze the Spanish demand for food taking into account the consumer's concern about the relationship between food diet and health. This concern is forcing food demand analysts to assume that consumer utility is a function of nutrients instead of simply the food products themselves. A CBS demand model has been considered to model the new demand function obtained, which is estimated with a complete panel data set. Ten broad categories, nine nutrients and the most relevant socio-economic variables have been considered. Finally, after an appropriate model selection strategy, expenditure, price and nutrient elasticities, as well as main sociodemographic effects, have been calculated.
